We designed our ALR reactors to be as simple to use as possible. The correct light output, brightness and tough design making them last.
By bringing the macro algae (Chaetomorpha sp.recommmended) into a contained space and properly lighting it with LED from all sides, the ALR1 allows optimal growth conditions and in turn optimal export of wastes from your aquarium.
This big increase in efficiency makes it the most effective use of an algae bed possible. The ALR1 quickly consumes Nitrate and Phosphate improving water quality whilst increasing oxygen and ORP.
During own testing we ran the ALR on a reverse light cycling schedule. This is turning the reactor on during the time the aquarium lights were off. This method helps to increase and stabilise an aquariums pH, raises the redox, and consumes exhaled CO2 from the coral's zooxanthellae whilst they had their night time. We have found this is the most efficient way to use it - coral growth was accellerated signficantly as a result!
The reactor can be run wet or dry, in or out of a sump.
When the reactor is full simply remove and dispose of the excess algae and all the nutrients it has consumed leaving enough algae in within the plates to start the cycle over.

One Size Fits All!
It all comes down to the frequency of harvest! If you use a big reactor on a smaller tank - you'll have much more time between servicing and visa versa. We generally recommend you use.
